Two Premieres Against 120 Returning Shows: October's Very Lopsided Calendar

Across thirty days the schedule holds 120 returning episodes and just two series premieres. Here is what those two are, and when they land.

EpisodePing's database holds 2,123 shows and 183,450 episodes, and the calendar for the next thirty days is almost entirely made up of shows that have already been running. Across the window from 17 October to mid-November there are 120 new episodes on the schedule — and exactly two series premieres.

That ratio is the story of this month's schedule. Two brand-new shows, against one hundred and twenty returning episodes. If you have been waiting for something fresh to start, the waiting list is short, so here is what those two are and when they land.

Newlyweds — NBC, 23 October

The first of the two arrives on Friday 23 October. Newlyweds is a comedy with a single season on the books and a premise built on speed: a free-spirited woman and a reserved professor marry shortly after a brief, intense courtship, and the show follows what happens after the decision is already made.

It is the kind of setup that works best when the two leads carry it, and it is the only new comedy on the calendar this month. NBC is the network, and its first episode airs alongside a Friday night that already includes returning episodes of Fire Country, Sheriff Country and The Rainmaker — so if you are already watching any of those, Newlyweds is a convenient addition rather than an extra appointment.

12 12 12 — Apple TV, 12 November

The second premiere is the more ambitious of the two. 12 12 12 arrives on Apple TV on 12 November, and the title is the structure: a heist takes twelve months to plan, twelve hours to execute, and a thief who is not caught within twelve days will not be caught at all.

The show tells that story across three timelines, following an FBI agent and a career criminal through a confrontation that plays out across Europe. It is tagged as action, crime and drama, which is an unusually broad spread, and it is the only series premiere in the second half of the window — nothing else new starts between the 23rd of this month and the middle of November.

What the calendar says

Two premieres against 120 returning episodes is a lopsided month, and it lines up with how the autumn schedule usually works: the new arrivals cluster at the start of the season, and what follows is a long run of continuing shows delivering week after week.

For anyone who keeps a watchlist, that is genuinely useful information. There is nothing you need to keep an eye out for in the next four weeks beyond these two, which means the month is better spent catching up on something already in progress than starting from scratch. The two shows below both return with new episodes within the week.

Worth catching up on this week

The Terminal List returns for its second season on 21 October with all eight episodes arriving at once. If you never got around to the first season — a slow-burn revenge story with a very deliberate pace — the whole thing is available, and the second season is waiting on the other side of it.

Nobody Wants This is the quicker assignment: the third season lands in full on 22 October. Ten episodes in one day is the biggest single drop of the month.

If you prefer something that has been running long enough to become a habit, The Simpsons airs season 38 episode 4, "Treehouse of Horror XXXVII," on 25 October, and South Park reaches season 29 episode 4 on 28 October. Both are far enough into their runs that you can drop in without catching up on anything.

Strictly Come Dancing airs twice a week, with episodes on 17, 18, 24 and 25 October, and Grey's Anatomy continues its twenty-third season with episodes on 22 and 29 October.

The takeaway

The next thirty days are a good month to catch up rather than start something new. Two premieres, both worth a look, and a hundred and twenty episodes of shows already running — many of which are easier to follow than the list makes them sound.
