Criminal Minds: Evolution will end with its 20th season. The Diplomat just earned a fifth. The two decisions landed a day apart last week, and put side by side they explain what television pays for now more clearly than any executive session would.
Netflix renewed The Diplomat for Season 5 on Thursday 29 October, late in the same month Season 4 arrived. The following afternoon, Deadline and Variety both reported that the upcoming 20th season of Criminal Minds: Evolution would be its last on Paramount+.
One show is being extended at five. The other is being closed at twenty, and it is not being closed because it stopped working. Deadline reported that the series is currently in Paramount+'s Top 10.
Two announcements, one day apart
The Diplomat's renewal was the simple kind. Season 4 debuted earlier in October and reached No. 3 on Netflix's global Top 10 in its second week, TVLine reported. Netflix's announcement put the series above 130 million views across its four seasons, with 13 weeks in the Top 10 and a Top 10 placing in 87 countries since it debuted in 2023. The renewal came while the season was still warm, which is its own kind of statement.
Criminal Minds took the other road. The 20th season premieres in 2027 and does not have a date yet, per Variety. Across two incarnations the franchise ran 15 seasons on CBS and five on Paramount+, where it was revived as Evolution in 2022. Season 19 aired between May and July this year.
Deadline's account of how the call was made is the part worth reading twice. It reported the decision was taken recently and was the first official cancellation for Paramount+'s new leadership under Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer for Skydance Direct to Consumer Casey Bloys, and that it came on a recommendation from the previous Paramount+ regime. That same regime had handed the show an early Season 20 renewal in March, ahead of the Season 19 debut. Deadline also reported that Season 20 finished production earlier this fall, which means the series will not get a proper ending.
Showrunner Erica Messer, in a statement, described the team as "suddenly navigating the end of this chapter." The phrase is doing a lot of work. A show that had already been renewed, had already shot its final season, and was still sitting inside the platform's Top 10 was closed anyway.
The company a 20-season show keeps
Deadline placed the run in context: at 20 seasons, Criminal Minds ends tied for fifth among the longest-running drama series, behind Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order, NCIS and Grey's Anatomy. All four of the shows ahead of it are still on the air.
That is the argument in a single line. The titles above it are broadcast institutions that never stopped producing. The one at 20 was a broadcast institution being operated on a streamer, and Deadline noted it is the last of its kind on Paramount+, following the platform's continuations of SEAL Team, Frasier and NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
Deadline's reporting also points at the economics underneath the decision. The call may be tied to how the show's performance measures against its cost, and to the awkwardness of a broadcast-style series, with its large orders and yearly cadence, living on a streaming service.
Five seasons is a hit now
Set the two announcements beside each other and a ceiling becomes visible. The Diplomat is a success by every measure a streamer publishes: more than 130 million views, a Top 10 in 87 countries, 10 Emmy nominations, two of them for best drama series, and a supporting actress Emmy for Allison Janney earlier this year, per TVLine. Its reward for all of that is a fifth season.
Nothing there is a complaint. Five seasons is a long run in 2026. It is simply a different unit of measure from the one that produced 20.
What the tracker list says
The EpisodePing catalogue holds 2,212 shows and 563,592 episodes, with 357 of them currently tracked. The 30 most-tracked shows, as of 5 November, say what the audience is actually watching, and the shape of that list repeats the same point in numbers.
The median show in the top 30 is on its second season. The average is 3.67. Exactly one title has reached double figures: South Park, at 29 seasons on Comedy Central, which is less a drama than a permanent fixture. Only five of the 30 have five seasons or more, namely South Park, The Rookie at nine, Bridgerton at five, Mayor of Kingstown at five and Stranger Things at five. Another five are still on season one, including Pluribus and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Criminal Minds appears nowhere in that 30. Neither does The Diplomat. The most-tracked list is a list of shows in their first half-decade, and a twenty-season drama is not competing in it.
Crime is still the biggest bloc, and it is young
Crime is the second-largest genre on the list after drama: 11 of the 30 titles carry it, and those 11 account for 45 of the list's 126 tracking entries, or 36%.
Their season counts are the interesting part. The median crime title in the top 30 is on season two. The average is 3.27. The longest-running is The Rookie at nine, on ABC. Behind it sit Mayor of Kingstown at five, then Tulsa King and Will Trent at four.
The platforms split the bloc almost evenly. ABC supplies three of the 11, with The Rookie, Will Trent and High Potential. Paramount+ supplies three as well, with Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King and MobLand. HBO, Disney+, Netflix, Hulu and CBS have one each.
Line up the Paramount+ three and the point makes itself: five seasons, four seasons, two seasons. The streamer that just ended a 20-season show has a crime slate whose longest run is a quarter of that.
The arithmetic behind the era
There is a mechanical explanation underneath all of this, and Deadline supplied the piece that matters most: HBO Max's model for series like The Pitt borrows broadcast's larger orders of 15 episodes a season, along with procedural elements and a yearly cadence, while keeping streaming-level production values.
That is the model being copied now, and it is not the model that produced Criminal Minds. Fifteen episodes a year for 20 years is 300 episodes and a habit in the audience. Eight to ten episodes a year over the same span is 160 to 200, and it depends on 20 consecutive renewal decisions going the right way.
Twenty seasons was never only a measure of quality. It was a measure of volume, and volume is the thing streaming stopped buying.
What to do with that
The practical version is simple. The long run has become a broadcast product. If you want a show that is still making seasons in 2040, the networks are where that still happens, and the proof is the four titles ahead of Criminal Minds that are all still on air.
If you want to know when any of them comes back, that is what the tracker is for. Mark the shows you are watching and EpisodePing will tell you when the next episode lands, whether that is season 21 of something built to last or season 1 of something that will be lucky to get three.
